CLOSED LOOP TREATMENT AND OPTIMIZATION:
Hot water, chilled water, tempered water, process water, and glycol filled closed loops are often ignored when considering a water treatment program, which can be a costly mistake. Closed loops that are not properly treated can cause significant corrosion damage. Closed loops that are leaking can waste water and energy while causing corrosion. These systems must be checked on a regular basis to confirm proper treatment level and system integrity. Water Tech - Chem-Aqua has the product line and technical expertise to recommend the appropriate treatment for the metallurgy in any closed loop system and monitor it after treatment is applied.

Support Services
Water Analysis
A thorough and up-to-date water analysis is a critical aspect in selecting a targeted and properly-dosed antiscalant product for reverse osmosis (RO) or nano-filtration (NF) systems of any size and water quality. Selective ions must be tested in the feed water in order to predict the scale/fouling potential in the system. The specific ions tested are then entered into the Avista Advisor Projection software where recovery rates, antiscalant selection, dose rates and potential scales/foulants are determined.
Laboratory Membrane Cleaning Study
Our Avista laboratory membrane cleaning studiy, in conjunction with our Avista membrane autopsy, is a useful tool in validating the effectiveness of a membrane cleaning regime against a site-specific foulant.
Membrane cell test cleaning study before.

Membrane cell test cleaning study after.

The Avista membrane autopsy identifies foulants and recommends solutions to minimize future fouling, and the Avista cleaning study identifies the best cleaner(s) and procedure to remove fouling on the Reverse Osmosis (RO), Nano (NF), Ultra (UF), or Micro (MF Filtration membranes already affected.
Samples of a dissected membrane or casing are placed on a clear cell tester and baseline flow and rejection performance are established under crossflow conditions. A cleaning solution is then recirculated through the tester at optimum temperature. Upon completion, post-clean data is recorded to determine the effectiveness of that particular chemistry. If necessary, this process continues until we’ve identified the cleaner that provides the best result.
Membrane and Module Autopsy
The physical dissection of a reverse osmosis (RO) element or microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF) module and the resulting analysis of its foulants can be one of the most definitive methods of troubleshooting a system.
Identifying the cause of performance loss is only part of this valuable service. Equally important are the recommendations provided in the Avista report which outlines the best course of action in correcting system problems including frequent cleanings, loss of productivity, reductions in permeate quality, system downtime or premature membrane or MF/UF replacement.
Why Conduct An Autopsy?
- To identify scaling or fouling problems
- To determine the proper cleaning regimen
- To improve system performance
Filtration Study
The MMF Filtration Study helps determine the most efficient and cost-effective dosage of RoQuest® coagulant for site-specific feedwaters. The MMF Laboratory Analysis uses particle counts, zeta potential, and turbidity to characterize a water sample for colloids and silt and determine its fouling potential. The analysis can be done on feed water or filtrate to gain a better understanding of the foulant parameters.
To assist you in identifying site-specific foulants, we offer Membrane Autopsies. Our Autopsies include Chromatic Elemental Imaging (CEI), an innovative technology first introduced by Avista that can identify the location and relative concentration of elements in a membrane fiber sample.

Granular Activated Carbon

Water Tech supplies a variety of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC, PAC) filter media to remove organic compounds, color, and / or extract free chlorine from water for reverse osmosis (RO), nano filtration (NF), manufacturing processes, discharge, and other applications.
Granular Activated Carbon remove impurities through adsorption and contact time. Free chlorine removal is the result of residence time in contact with the carbon, rather than filter surface loading, with standard design of typically 2 to 6 gpm / ft3 of carbon bed. Chloramines are significantly harder to remove than chlorine, and require an extended period of contact with the activated carbon, referred to as empty bed contact time (EBCT).
Our Activated Carbon Media Types Include:
- Bituminous: Coal based granular media.
- Coconut Shell: Superior hardness; high activity level; trihalomethane removal; long life.
- Acid washed: Increased adsorptive capacity, low pH applications.
- Catalytic: Specialized to remove hydrogen sulfide gas, iron, and chloramines.
Contaminants Removed by Our Granular Activated Carbon Include:
- Chlorine
- Color
- Organic Substances and Chemicals

Sand, Gravel, Anthracite & Garnet

Reliable Suspended Solids (TSS) and Turbidity Removal
Water Tech high quality anthracite, sand, garnet, and gravel filter multi-media, and engineered filter systems provide reliable removal of suspended solids and turbidity in water treatment applications.
Multimedia water filters utilize anthracite, sand, gravel, and garnet with a gravel under bed, chosen for their distinct density and size differences. Anthracite - the lightest, most course media at the top, sand in the middle, and garnet - the heaviest, finest media at the bottom.
This filtration layering allows the largest contaminants to be trapped in the top filter layer, with smaller particulates sifting farther down into the lower layers, providing more efficient turbidity removal and longer run times between backwash cycles. A sand-only filter filters particles to about 20-25 microns in size, and a multi-media filter to about 10-20 microns.
Water Tech coagulants can also be applied upstream of a filter to improve removal of very fine particles through “direct filtration” or "agglomeration".
Water Tech also supplies pre-engineered multi-media filter tanks and systems in all sizes.

Calcite Media pH Neutralizer
Economical Distribution System Corrosion Control
Water Tech Calcite is a naturally occurring, white marble calcium carbonate media used to neutralize acidic or low pH water such as reverse osmosis (RO) permeate, increase pH and reduce corrosion. One advantage of Calcite is that when properly applied, it corrects pH only enough to reach a non-corrosive equilibrium. It does not overcorrect under normal conditions. Upon contact with Calcite, acidic waters slowly dissolve the calcium carbonate to raise the pH which reduces distribution system corrosion and the potential leaching of copper, lead and other metals found in plumbing systems.
General Operating Conditions:
- Gravel support bed recommended
- Water pH range: 5.0-7.0
- Bed depth: 24-30 in.
- Freeboard: 50% of bed depth (min.)
- Backwash rate: 8-12 gpm/sq. ft.
- Service flow rate: 3-6 gpm/sq. ft.
Water Tech also supplies pre-engineered calcite filter tanks and systems in all sizes.
